The position

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) is integral to all AkzoNobel’s objectives and our strategy is to deliver leading performance across all our activities in terms of all HSE and Product Safety & Regulatory Affairs (PSRA) standards, performance and capability. Evidence of our success in this area is the fact that we have topped the influential Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the fourth consecutive year.

Your mission in this role is to take our environmental commitment and expertise to the next level by driving the development of policies, procedures and guidelines across functions, in line with business needs and AkzoNobel strategies and policies. In doing so, you align with all relevant legislation and standards in order to minimize environmental risks and maximize our reputation in this crucial area.

Tasks & responsibilities

This is a significant and influential role for an experienced professional with meaningful manufacturing experience.

Working from our offices in Arnhem and Amsterdam, the Netherlands, your core purpose is to drive the implementation of AkzoNobel’s Environmental Strategy & Common Platform programs. You achieve this by developing and implementing the environmental framework, protocols, setting up expert pools, training, scheduling scans and reporting. In doing so you gain the full buy-in of all relevant stakeholders across our corporate functions, business areas and business units.

This requires you to design, develop and maintain Environmental Management & PSM training materials and workshops. You also ensure systematic learning between functions and business units through sharing best practices, mentoring and internal networking. 

Further, you serve as a leading expert in environmental and process safety due diligence reviews, audits, scans, risk assessments, incident investigations, SIL, LOPA.

At all times you keep up with in- and external HSE developments so that you are able to act as an internal consultant, formulating and presenting possible solutions for non-standard HSE questions. You also identify and evaluate HSE risk issues as well as making suggestions for improvement and supporting implementation.

In order to achieve all this it is essential that you build and maintain a network with in- and external HSE professionals in order to ensure transfer of HSE knowledge.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess the following attributes:

  • Academic degree or higher in an environmental subject and/or chemical engineering
  • At least 10 years of experience in a (chemical) manufacturing role (e.g. as member of a site management team / plant manager)
  • Proven track record in environmental engineering project management in different assignments
  • Flexible and analytical team player able to deploy sound judgment and make rational decisions
  • Proactive and client focused, able to interact promptly, courteously and professionally with all levels of our matrix organization
  • Comfortable with using and learning all relevant office technologies
  • Powerful communication skills including fluent written and spoken English
