AkzoNobel

The organisation

AkzoNobel creates everyday essentials to make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring. As a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals, we supply essential ingredients, essential protection and essential color to industries and consumers worldwide.

Backed by a pioneering heritage, our innovative products and sustainable technologies are designed to meet the growing demands of our fast-changing planet, while making life easier. Headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we have approximately 45,000 people in around 80 countries, while our portfolio includes well-known brands such as Flexa, Sikkens, Alabastine and Jozo.

Consistently ranked as a leader in sustainability, we are dedicated to energizing cities and communities while creating a protected, colorful world where life is improved by what we do.

The position

AkzoNobel’s Industrial Chemicals (IC) business unit (BU) produces and markets high purity salt, chlorine, caustic lye, hydrochloric acid, chloromethanes and monochloroacetic acid (MCA). These products are essential to daily life and used in the manufacture of vehicles, glass, performance plastics, pharmaceuticals, feed and foodstuffs, textiles and disinfectants. IC has a global presence with plants and joint ventures in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Spain, the USA, China and Japan. IC is part of the business area Specialty Chemicals.

IC is committed to a forward thinking IC 4.0 program that aims for fully autonomous plants based on new production processes with reduced asset intensity, increased resource efficiency (materials and energy), and a product portfolio based on renewable resources. We also aim to increase sales from our current products by identifying new applications. We can only achieve this by applying new technologies within financially feasible projects and by continuing to successfully deliver process optimization initiatives through the L6S approach.

Within this context, your mission in this role is to lead the acceleration of radical innovation and (continuous) improvements so that we achieve our cost productivity target and, ultimately, our growth targets. In doing so you work closely with the Businesses, Integrated Supply Chain (ISC), and the Advanced Manufacturing group.

Is this a challenge that matches your ambitions as a proactive, analytical and results focused change driver? Do you have experience and/or affinity with the worldwide scouting and screening of new technologies and applications? Can you manage multiple functional projects, involving external partners with significant (future) business impact? Do you have experience and affinity with identifying partners, managing stakeholders and collaborating with universities, start-ups, peer companies etc? Above all, can you make a real difference within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?

If you offer all this and more, we invite you to apply for the position of Innovation Project Leader 4.0.

Tasks & responsibilities

This is a high profile and even visionary role based at the AkzoNobel Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Your core function is to define and get agreement for new projects with a minimum value of €5mln/a as part of the IC 4.0 project portfolio.

Thus you identify and prioritize technology needs in Operations and Logistics, scout for applicable technologies available in the market, and identify partners with whom to develop innovative solutions. You then propose these to the Business and ISC for implementation on a Go/No Go basis for the BU, with a view to possible implementation across the Specialty Chemicals business area.

This requires you to execute Proof-of-Value and to align with stakeholders in order to obtain buy-in and priority. It also demands that you gain and maintain knowledge of the latest trends and technologies while performing advanced (big) data analytics (at least R or Python), including concepts such as deep learning and active learning. This applies to areas such as Sensors, Non Destructive Testing (NDT), Data visualization (e.g. Spotfire), Robotics.

At all times you follow the curriculum of (standard) Innovation Project Leadership and run projects according to AkzoNobel ICP Stage-gate process. You also contribute to the portfolio of IC 4.0 through workshops and brainstorm sessions on site, and you scout for partners and suppliers etc via Maintenance Knowledge Centers e.g. Terneuzen, Hamburg, SPRINT Robotics, conferences and incubators etc.

Finally, as an experienced and inspirational leader you act as trainer and mentor for the project team.

As such, this is exciting and high profile opportunity for candidates who can apply advanced project management skills – including scope and uncertainty management – within a leading and future-focused organization.

Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess all the following attributes:

  • PhD degree in science and technology, preferably in (applied) physics or automation engineering
  • Experience in the Chemicals industry including the running of major cross functional internal innovation projects, with exposure to more than one functional area and collaboration with external parties
  • Ideally certified in L6S (Brown Belt/Advanced Practitioner)
  • Knowledge and experience with different automation methods, as well as knowledge and experience with real time data and acquisition/mining/analysis/visualization in a production environment
  • Able to apply Innovation Core Processes and Gatekeeping
  • Excellent internal and external communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent written and spoken English
