Top of Minds for ING

The organisation

The goal of ING Domestic Banking NL (DBNL) is to make it as easy as possible for customers to pay, plan, achieve goals, expand businesses, act ethically, and handle unexpected challenges. DBNL aims to provide the best possible banking experience to its customers in the Netherlands, and its Tech organization is crucial in making this happen.

This Tech organization is led by the Chief Information Officer and a Management Team, consisting of five Domain Directors, one Chief Architect, and one Chief Information Security Officer. One of the domains is Banking Products, encompassing investments & private banking, billing, insurance, savings, consumer lending, and loyalty. All these products depend on quality IT and data, managed closely with the business.

The Banking Products’ domain’s strategic goal for the next few years is twofold: growing domestic products through, for instance, further digitization; and rolling out successful DBNL products in other countries. On an international level, ING operates based on local strengths. This means that if a product, developed for any given domestic market, is successful, it can be rolled out internationally – using the locally designed and maintained technology or platform. So, domestic Tech organizations may not solely be focused on developing for their domestic market, but may become responsible for serving other ING countries with best-in-class, user-friendly, internationally scalable backend solutions. This is true for DBNL as well, adding a layer of complexity to the organization’s roadmap and responsibilities.

The position

As the largest bank in the Netherlands, ING sets a high bar for the quality of its product portfolio. To grow the business, ING Domestic Banking Netherlands focuses on expanding and digitizing domestic products and rolling out its products in other countries. The IT Director Banking Products manages the IT strategy for key components of ING’s core business and a team of over 300 FTE.

Tasks & responsibilities

The IT Director Banking Products manages the technology and development behind all products in this domain: investments & private banking, billing, insurance, savings, consumer lending, and loyalty. They will translate and implement the IT strategy in line with the overall DBNL strategy, with a solid understanding of business challenges and a keen eye on business performance. Meanwhile, they will ensure safety, compliance, stability, and reliability; simplifying architecture where possible, managing all necessary maintenance and migrations, and devising an effective sourcing strategy.

DBNL’s Tech organization strives to foster a true engineering culture and a unified Agile Way of Working, for which this role acts as an ambassador and role model. The IT Director Banking Products will stimulate collaboration and alignment across teams, tribes, squads, areas, and chapters, as well as cross-functional and cross-organizational collaboration. After all, working together with the business (both domestically and in other countries, where a number of DBNL products will be rolled out) is key for this domain. They will also ensure strong collaboration with global stakeholders, providing input on ING’s Tech vision and Scalable Platform strategy and ensuring these are properly implemented domestically.

The IT Director Banking Products is part of the DBNL Management Team and reports to the CIO. Their team consists of 330 FTEs, with several IT Area Leads and Feature Engineers as direct reports. A solid technology development background and a deep understanding of the engineering challenges and the necessary capabilities and competencies within the team will allow the IT Director Banking Products to hit the ground running.

“Complexity in this dynamic role stems from the combination of in-house technology and SaaS solutions; the need to support other countries in the rollout of these products and serve them with DBNL technology; and the envisioned growth in our domestic products, for instance in Investments, where we anticipate growing significantly in ING.” – Edwin Entrop, CIO

Candidate profile

This role is a unique challenge for a tech leader with deep IT knowledge, who also has experience developing consumer products. The IT Director Banking Products will be a key figure in ensuring DBNL achieves its goals around secure, user-friendly, commercially viable, and internationally scalable banking products, supported by best-in-class technology.
