The organisation

Our client is active in the procurement, transportation, marketing and distribution of various raw materials for a large number of industries in the paint, plastics, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics sectors.

The position

Our client is seeking a Commercial Director / General Manager to boost the company’s revenue in Europe and adapt the organisation to current market needs.

As a service provider for the Group, the Dutch subsidiary provides commercial, purchasing, logistical and financial support to the production locations. This subsidiary has not adapted its commercial strategy during recent decades, although the market for chemical suppliers has changed considerably.

Tasks & responsibilities

The main goal for the CD/GM will be to boost revenue growth and set and achieve sales targets. The CD/GM will also be required to lead and grow our client's partner and distributor sales business.
Furthermore, the CD/GM will be expected to look to the future of the business, promote potential key investments and make investment recommendations. The CD/GM will participate in industry conferences and events to engage new contacts and accounts. This role will involve travelling nationally and internationally for up to 50% of the time.

An important role for the CD/GM will be to reshape the Dutch subsidiary to meet markets needs. This will mean reviewing and, where necessary, updating existing systems, procedures and processes. A more formal, business-like approach needs to be implemented and contract management needs to be organised and fleshed out.

The current team comprises 10 employees and most of them have been working together for over 10 years. The CD/GM will lead by example and build a high-performing team while creating a fun, safe, energetic and collaborative working culture. Their energy must motivate the team and improve day-to-day performance and efficiency. They will also assist in employee recruitment, training, performance evaluation, promotion and employment termination activities. Together with the Finance Manager and the Logistics Manager, the CD/GM will form the Management Team in the Netherlands. The CD/GM will report to the CEO.

Candidate profile

  • Experience in a commercial role in the chemical industry is a must. Preferably at a trading and/or distribution company.
  • Manager who manages, coaches and leads by example.
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English.
  • Sufficient cultural awareness to deal with a team from different regions and with different backgrounds.
  • Commercially strong, result-driven, entrepreneur, energetic.
