Chief Scientific Officer

The organization

For a biotech company near Brussels, we are looking for a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO). Using their cutting-edge technology platform, the company is working on developing peptide-based novel modalities, with a strong potential anti-bacterial and oncological compounds. After recently finishing a series A funding round, they have built up a solid financial basis and are scaling up their activities. To ensure their success, they are looking to hire a full-time CSO that can further build-up the R&D department, can decide on the strategic course of the company and will act as the scientific face to the outside world.

The position

In this challenging C-level role you will take on the end-responsibility over all R&D related activities inside the company. As this is a technology platform driven company, you will ensure the successful continued development of the platform, as well as the emergence of new product candidates.

Tasks & responsibilities

In this position you will have overall responsibility for the corporate scientific deliverables and can expect the following key accountabilities:

• Defining and growing areas of strategic focus in alignment with the company’s objectives
• Developing and implementing an innovative scientific strategy for internal discovery and potential partnering activities
• Portfolio management to meet the corporate R&D pipeline goals
• Establishing collaborative and positive working relationships with key stakeholders (both in industry and academia) as to access translational insights and disease expertise
• Staying abreast of developments in the external scientific community
• Planning, directing and efficiently managing the R&D budget
• Driving non-dilutive grant funding

Candidate profile

To be successful in this position, you bring the following experience:

• Advanced scientific degree such as PhD, PharmD or MD
• More than ten years of scientific industry experience
• Strong managerial experience in discovery research
• Close involvement from discovery up to translational
• Previous experience within a technology platform focussed biotech company
• Expertise in either oncology or bacterial infectious (not immuno-oncology)

• You think outside the box and is a visionary for technology development, including commercial opportunity
• You bring energy and enthusiasm as to create a can-do mentality within the R&D team
• You have the managerial experience to enable the R&D team to reach essential milestones in a timely manner
