Structural Engineer 
 
General description
 
The Structural Engineer works within the Construction Engineering Department. The Structural Engineer is responsible for the structural engineering in relation to the new built vessel.
 
Job objectives
 
The activities of the Structural Engineer are primarily focused on the structural aspects for the vessel. This may be required for activities related to contracts, tenders, research and development, business development or engineering department improvements. 
With sufficient experience and knowledge gained (in depth or general) and proven capability in the field, the Structural Engineer can expect to obtain the title of Senior Structural Engineer.
 
Reporting lines
 
The Structural Engineer reports directly to the Engineering Manager. While working on specific projects, he/she will also report to the respective Project Manager. 
 
General responsibilities
 
  • Conduct all activities and tasks in accordance with corporate objectives;
  • Familiarise with and comply to the corporate management system (CMS);
  • Focus all activities in order to meet the overall corporate objectives (mission statement);
  • The quality of all matters related to structural engineering;
  • Submit personal timesheets into the RTR/(Web)Solo system for approval on a weekly basis;
  • Ensure all personal documentation is up-to-date and valid, such as passport, seaman's booklet, medical certificate and offshore survival certificate.
Job specific tasks
 
  • Analyse project specifications on structural design related project items, define the scope of work and design criteria;
  • Prepare the planning for the structural part of the scope of work;
  • Prepare the necessary calculations, analyses and designs and related reports within the scope, budget and schedule defined at the start of the project;
  • Emphasize minimise fabrication costs;
  • Provide adequate information and direction to the drawing office for preparations of drawings;
  • Perform detailed calculations using the appropriate (structural) software;
  • Prepare MTO’s, specifications, equipment lists, etc.;
  • Inform the Lead Structural Engineer on a regular basis;
  • Perform (inter)discipline checks on reports and drawings (IDC);
  • Maintain a complete file of all performed work;
  • Inform manager in case procedures collide with actual working practice;
  • Review subcontractor equipment design and installation methods;
  • Provide feedback and input to improve departmental standards, working methods and guidelines;
  • Update and supply the appropriate registrations, as communicated through manager.

  • Originator check of structural engineering deliverables;
  • Discipline check of structural engineering deliverables;
  • Inter discipline check of engineering deliverables issued by the other departments;
  • Inter Discipline check of subcontractor documents if required by Project Manager.
Education level and training
 
  • BSc or MSc in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Offshore Engineering or equivalent.
Experience
 
  • Minimum of 7 years experience as Structural Engineer, preferably with shipbuilding projects.
  • The numbers of years experience determines the seniority of this position.
